Most people working toward BCBA certification eventually run into the same practical problem: they understand that fieldwork is required, but figuring out where those hours are actually supposed to come from can get confusing fast.
Who supervises you? What counts as unrestricted work? Do you have to be an RBT? Can supervision happen remotely? What happens if your employer cannot provide a BCBA or enough qualifying activities?
Those are the questions this guide answers.
There is also something especially important for anyone collecting fieldwork in 2026: the BCBA fieldwork requirements change on January 1, 2027.
If you are earning hours now but expect to submit your BCBA certification application in 2027, those changes already matter. Hours you plan to use in a 2027 application need to be accrued and documented in a way that satisfies the 2027 requirements.
Waiting until January to start thinking about this can create a serious problem.
Before You Start: Know Whether You Will Apply Under the 2022 or 2027 Requirements
The rule that matters here is simple: the date you submit your certification application determines which fieldwork requirements apply.
To be reviewed under the 2022 requirements, the BACB must receive your complete application, including payment and all required documents, by December 31, 2026. Applications submitted beginning January 1, 2027, must meet the 2027 requirements.
If you are not completely certain which side of that deadline you will land on, the BACB recommends planning to meet both sets of requirements. In practical terms, that means:
Staying at or below 130 fieldwork hours per month while you are preserving both application options
Maintaining 10% supervision during Concentrated Supervised Fieldwork months, because 7.5% meets the 2027 requirement but does not meet the 2022 requirement
Tracking both the number and duration of client observations and completing at least 60 cumulative minutes for Supervised Fieldwork or 90 cumulative minutes for Concentrated Supervised Fieldwork
Completing both the 2022 and 2027 Monthly Fieldwork Verification Forms each month when you are meeting both sets of requirements and remain unsure when you will apply
Completing both versions of the Final Fieldwork Verification Form when the supervision experience ends if either application option is still possible
Yes, that is additional paperwork. It is still much easier than trying to reconstruct months or years of fieldwork after a supervision relationship has ended.

Once you know which requirements your fieldwork arrangement needs to satisfy, the next question is the one most trainees are actually trying to answer: Where can you get the hours?
Where Can You Get BCBA Supervision Hours?
There is no single setting where everyone has to complete BCBA fieldwork.
Some trainees obtain fieldwork and supervision through an employer. Others receive supervision through a university, an independent BCBA, or a structured remote supervision program.
The important part is whether the entire arrangement works.
Before you start counting hours, you should know:
who your qualified supervisor will be,
where your qualifying fieldwork will come from,
which clients your work will be connected to,
how unrestricted activities will be developed,
how supervision will occur,
how client observations will occur,
how your documentation will be maintained,
who will review that documentation, and
who will sign the required verification forms.
Current BACB requirements make client relevance important. Qualifying fieldwork needs to involve appropriate behavior-analytic activities connected to client programming (BACB, 2026a).
A supervision appointment by itself is not a complete fieldwork arrangement.
Can You Get BCBA Supervision Hours Online?
Yes.
Remote BCBA supervision can be part of a qualifying fieldwork arrangement when the activities and supervision satisfy the applicable BACB requirements.
Under the current requirements, observation of the trainee working with a client may occur in person, through synchronous video, or through asynchronous recorded video (BACB, 2026a).
Supervisor-trainee contacts are different. Those contacts involve real-time interaction (BACB, 2026a).
A remote program should still involve meaningful behavior-analytic work, individualized feedback, client-specific activities, documentation, and opportunities to develop the judgment expected of a future BCBA.
Remote should describe where supervision happens, not how seriously the fieldwork is taken.
Can You Get BCBA Fieldwork Hours Without Being an RBT?
Yes.
RBT certification is not listed as a prerequisite for BCBA certification or fieldwork in the current eligibility requirements (BACB, 2026a).
The BACB notes that trainees may hold an RBT certification while completing fieldwork, but many tasks completed as part of RBT work or RBT ongoing supervision may not count toward BCBA fieldwork (BACB, 2026a).
Being an RBT can provide useful experience. It is not the only possible route to qualifying BCBA fieldwork.
That matters for teachers, school professionals, counselors, case managers, graduate students, healthcare professionals, and people entering behavior analysis from other careers.
You do not necessarily need to abandon an established career solely to obtain an RBT position.
You do need a legitimate way to complete qualifying, client-specific behavior-analytic activities under appropriate supervision.
Restricted vs. Unrestricted BCBA Hours
At least 60% of total BCBA fieldwork must consist of unrestricted activities (BACB, 2026a). That requirement applies across the total accumulated fieldwork. It does not have to be achieved within every individual month.
Restricted Activities
The BACB defines restricted activities as the delivery of therapeutic or instructional procedures to a client (BACB, 2026a).
Restricted activities may make up no more than 40% of total fieldwork.
There is no minimum restricted-hour requirement (BACB, 2026a).
That distinction matters.
Working directly with a client does not automatically make an activity restricted. Some unrestricted BCBA-level activities can also involve direct work with clients.
How to Get Unrestricted BCBA Fieldwork Hours
The BACB describes unrestricted activities as those “most likely to be performed by a BCBA” (BACB, 2026a, p. 17).
Examples include:
observation and data collection,
training staff and caregivers on behavior-analytic programming,
conducting behavior-analytic assessments,
meeting with clients regarding behavior-analytic programming and services,
graphing and analyzing data,
researching literature relevant to a current client's programming,
writing and revising behavior-analytic programs,
designing and monitoring skill-acquisition and behavior-reduction programs,
writing clinical and professional documentation,
training others, and
participating in other client-specific activities typically performed by behavior analysts.
(BACB, 2026a)
The client-specific part is important.
Reading a random behavior-analysis article does not automatically create fieldwork.
Researching literature because it directly informs a current client's programming can be qualifying behavior-analytic activity.
Context matters.
How Many BCBA Supervision Hours Do You Need Each Month?
Under the current requirements:
Supervised Fieldwork
60 fieldwork hours
5% = 3 supervision hours
100 fieldwork hours
5% = 5 supervision hours
130 fieldwork hours
5% = 6.5 supervision hours
Concentrated Supervised Fieldwork
60 fieldwork hours
10% = 6 supervision hours
100 fieldwork hours
10% = 10 supervision hours
130 fieldwork hours
10% = 13 supervision hours
These calculations follow the current 5% and 10% monthly supervision requirements (BACB, 2026a).
For a 2027 application, Concentrated Supervised Fieldwork instead uses a 7.5% supervision requirement (BACB, 2026a, 2026b).
Calculate this before the month begins.
Do not wait until the final week of the month to realize the fieldwork total you accumulated requires more supervision than you scheduled.
How Much Does BCBA Supervision Cost?
There is no universal price for independent BCBA supervision.
Programs may charge by the supervision hour, by the month, or through another structure.
I would look beyond the hourly rate.
Ask what the supervision arrangement actually includes.
Are clients provided?
Where will the qualifying fieldwork come from?
Is the fieldwork predominantly unrestricted?
Does someone review your documentation?
How are client observations handled?
Is supervision individualized?
What happens when something in your tracker does not make sense?
A low supervision rate is not much of a bargain if you are left to figure out every other part of fieldwork yourself.
BCBA Fieldwork Documentation Is Not an Afterthought
The BACB requires documentation capable of demonstrating that fieldwork requirements were satisfied (BACB, 2026a).
If fieldwork is audited, additional records may be requested, including supervision contracts, M-FVFs, tracking documentation, and other supporting records (BACB, 2026a).
Your ongoing documentation should capture information such as:
dates,
start and end times,
fieldwork type,
supervisor information,
restricted versus unrestricted classification,
supervision contacts,
individual versus group supervision,
summaries of supervision activities, and
client-observation information.
(BACB, 2026a)
The responsible supervisor and trainee must complete the appropriate M-FVF every month. The appropriate F-FVF is completed at the end of the fieldwork experience, and the F-FVF is submitted with the certification application (BACB, 2026a).
Fieldwork records also have a long shelf life. Applicable fieldwork documentation must be retained for at least 7 years (BACB, 2026a, 2026b).
Write your fieldwork documentation as though someone who was not present may need to understand it years from now.
What I Tell Trainees Before They Start Counting Hours
I would rather find a fieldwork problem during month 1 than discover it after someone has collected 600 hours.
People understandably focus on the total.
They want to know how quickly they can reach 1,500 or 2,000.
I care just as much about what is underneath the number.
What were you actually doing?
Was it behavior analytic?
Was it client specific?
Was it really unrestricted?
Did the supervision requirement get met?
Was the observation completed correctly?
Does the documentation make sense?
Could your supervisor defend what was counted?
And after all those hours, are you actually becoming better prepared to function independently as a behavior analyst?
The BACB places responsibility on supervisors to ensure fieldwork is in the client's best interest rather than being completed only for the purpose of satisfying certification requirements (BACB, 2026a).
That is what the experience should accomplish.
Fieldwork should not become a creative exercise in making a tracker reach a number.
How Applied Behavior Analysts Developed
Applied Behavior Analysts did not begin as a traditional fieldwork supervision company.
The practice grew out of caregiver education and community behavior-support work in Culpeper, Virginia.
That early work received local media attention when Allison Brophy Champion profiled the practice in the Culpeper Star-Exponent article “Culpeper behavior analyst offers pro bono parenting classes” in January 2025 (Champion, 2025).
As that work expanded, graduate students began contacting me about BCBA supervision.
The supervision program grew from there.
Today, our remote BCBA supervision model is designed for trainees who need more than somebody willing to meet for an hour and sign a form.
Clients are provided through our practice.
Fieldwork is predominantly unrestricted and built around meaningful, client-specific behavior-analytic activities.
Supervision is individualized.
Trainees may work on assessment, caregiver training, treatment development, data interpretation, research connected to client needs, clinical problem solving, documentation, program evaluation, and other appropriate BCBA-level activities.
We also place a heavy emphasis on documentation because fieldwork, supervision, client services, and the records supporting those hours should all tell the same story.
How to Get Started With BCBA Supervision
Before choosing a fieldwork arrangement, answer these questions:
When do you realistically expect to submit your BCBA certification application?
Which requirements will be in effect when you apply?
If your application date is uncertain, are you meeting and documenting both sets of transition requirements?
Are you completing Supervised or Concentrated Supervised Fieldwork?
How many fieldwork hours can you realistically accrue each month?
Where will your clients come from?
Where will your unrestricted activities come from?
How will client observations be completed and documented?
How will your fieldwork documentation be reviewed?
Who will sign your monthly and final verification forms?
Then evaluate potential supervisors and programs based on the entire fieldwork arrangement, not just a supervision rate.
