Interested in OBM? Build Your BCBA Fieldwork Around the Work You Want to Do

Matthew Hilley

When you picture your future in behavior analysis, what kind of work interests you?

Perhaps you want to help employees learn new skills, improve how teams communicate, or understand why a business process keeps breaking down. You might be drawn to leadership, workplace training, or consulting.

Those interests have a place in behavior analysis. Organizational Behavior Management, commonly called OBM, applies behavior science to the way people and organizations work.

If that direction appeals to you, it deserves a place in your fieldwork planning.

What does OBM involve?

OBM examines how working conditions influence behavior and how changes to those conditions can improve employee performance and organizational outcomes. The focus includes what people are expected to do, whether they have the skills and resources to do it, and what happens when they do.

Imagine a team that repeatedly misses an important handoff. An OBM approach might examine whether the handoff steps are clear, whether employees have practiced them, and whether they receive useful feedback. Changes can then be evaluated against observable results.

That combination of practical questions, measurement, and evaluation makes OBM an appealing direction for people interested in both behavior science and business.

Can BCBA fieldwork involve corporate clients?

Yes. The BACB explains that clients can receive behavior-analytic services in different settings, including groups of employees in a corporate office.

The activity still needs to qualify. Working for a business does not automatically make every task eligible fieldwork. Your supervisor must evaluate the activities, supervision arrangements, and applicable requirements with you.

See the BACB’s fieldwork guidance.

That makes the choice of supervision especially important. Your fieldwork should help you develop relevant skills through appropriately supervised work connected to clients.

Explore OBM supervision through The BASN

For aspiring BCBAs interested in this direction, The BASN offers lower-cost, fixed-price fieldwork supervision focused on OBM and corporate clients.

It is an option to explore if you want your fieldwork to connect with interests in workplace performance, employee development, or organizational consulting.

Fixed pricing can also make the financial side easier to plan. When comparing programs, review what the price includes, the supervision arrangements, and the type of client work available.

Bring your career interests into that conversation. Ask how the program’s activities connect to the skills you want to develop and how your progress will be evaluated.

Choose fieldwork with your future in mind

At Applied Behavior Analysts, our supervision program focuses on caregiver training. If your interests point toward businesses and workplaces, we want you to know about The BASN’s OBM option.

Think about the problems you would enjoy helping clients solve. Consider the settings where you want to practice. Then choose supervision that supports those interests while helping you develop sound behavior-analytic judgment.
